IPOH, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- All preparations for this year's Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) cycling race are going smoothly and are on schedule, said LTdL 2010 chief executive officer Mohamed Salleh.

"We are raring to go and are just awaiting opening day," he told reporters after checking on the preparedness of the national team here on Sunday.

He and Malaysian National Cycling Federation president Abu Samah Wahab spent about three hours with the team, which is being guided by LTdL's chief technical officer William Walker.

Asked about the national team setting a target of finishing 12th overall this year, Mohamed said achieving the position would be more realistic next year.

The national squad will be up against 19 other teams involving a total of 120 riders in the prestigious cycling competition.

This year's edition, from March 1 to 7, comprises seven stages beginning in Kota Baharu and ending in Kelantan.

Meanwhile, Adiq Husainie Othman, 19, who is representing the Drapac Porsche continental team of Australia, is placing high hopes of emerging as the best Asian rider in this year's LTdL.

"I have been training very hard since December and am optimistic of doing very well," he said when met by reporters after a training session with the national team.

The Malaysian lad had won the bronze in the 10km scratch at the World Junior Track Championships in Moscow last August and went on to win a silver and two bronze at the Asian Cycling Championships in Indonesia a few days after that.

The feats earned the junior a promotion to the national elite squad. He joined Drapac Porsche towards the end of last year.
