PUTRAJAYA,
Jan 8 (Bernama) -- Le Tour De Langkawi (LTDL) will have a
minimum of one King of the Mountain (KOM) for each of its
seven stages this year, ensuring a more challenging competition.
The Youth
and Sports Ministry's secretary-general Datuk Mohd Yasin Mohd
Salleh, at a news conference here today, said that this would
mean that whoever won Genting Highlands King of the Mountain
it will not necessarily mean he would win the entire competition
unlike previous LTDLs.
"Before
we took the King of the Mountain Genting Highlands as King
of the Event. Whoever wins King of the Mountain he is will
emerge as stage champion and overall LTDL champion.
"This
year it is more open as early on each stage will have a King
of the Mountain. So cyclists at each stage will collect certain
points.
"So
even if the strongest cyclist won in Genting Highlands, he
may lose as at other stages another cyclist may have more
points. Including the last stage which will have two KOMs,"
said Mohd Yasin.
The 1008km
race which begins from March 1 till the 7th will continue
to have the three sprints per stage as usual and the organisers
are in the final stages of preparation.
Just like
the competition's previous incarnations, 20 countries will
compete.
As for
the National Team, Malaysia National Cyclist Federation president
Abu Samah Wahab said that 10 athletes have been identified
to compete and the invitation letters had been sent out.
The athletes
will report themselves at the National Sports Council on January
11 and training will commence in Sabah from January 17-24.
"This
year we will have just one team that is National Team (Team
Kebangsaan. We will not have the Continental Team as it needs
to be in Sukma," said Abu Samah.
When asked
whether the training time would be enough, he said it should
be enough.
Regarding
the National Team's target, Mohd Yasin hoped the team would
win the 12th place and "if possible try to be Asian Champion".
